Leadership In Practice #126 - Fermentation Fridays 301
0 57mins Nov 3
Join us on the first Friday of the month for “Fermentation Fridays” taught by Chef Dani Chavez-Bello.

More and more science is being exposed on the link between gut health and brain health. The gut is often called a "second brain" because it produces many of the same neurotransmitters as the brain does, including serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid, all of which play a key role in regulating mood and are a part of a thriving microbiome.

One of the best ways to promote a healthy microbiome is to regularly add fermented foods into your diet. Fermentation is also easy and safe to do at home with simple direction—this series will help get you set up with the basics of fermentation and the skills to build it into your weekly routine.

About this Class
Leadership in Practice #46: How To: Lead an Organization through 21st Century Transformation
Leadership in Practice, taught by Next Jump's Co-CEOs Meghan Messenger and Charlie Kim, is a comprehensive class designed to equip leaders with the essential skills needed to navigate the ever-changing landscape of work and become the difference-makers in their organizations. This series focuses on the importance of effective decision-making in uncertainty, a critical skill for 21st-century leaders, exploring changes and trends in the market, while also covering other trending topics that drive human performance, such as self-awareness, teaming, emotional intelligence, mood, nutrition, and more. Through insightful presentations and thought-provoking discussions, attendees learn to adapt and thrive in the face of emerging challenges in the modern workplace and unlearn old habits that no longer serve them.

Please note—this class is part of a series. Classes may be attended out of order, but prior concepts may be referenced. To catch up on previous classes simply search “Leadership in Practice” in the Video Hub.

Leadership In Practice Certificates are available for individuals who consistently attend class.

Sounds amazing - bet there are some real powerful stories in OSA
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
The collaboration of this group is more powerful than anticipated. Truly exponential learning and growth that is impossible to be done independently
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
We are struggling with that as well. How do you motivate the technical experts if all of the high grade positions are managers
Kristi Murray, Sodexo - via Zoom · 4 years ago
People are promoted beyond their ability,
Karen $Mgmt, Calif - via Zoom · 4 years ago
2%? We are already toast! Our environment has already changed way more than 2%! How do we recover?
J. Nolfo, BASF, Raleigh - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Karen, hence the reason so many people have had problems over the past year.
Lindsay, Infotek, Alabama - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Carla - yes! we struggle with that too!
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I would expect those technical experts to provide strategic vision as experts in their field… to me, that’s part of leadership and worthy of a higher grade
Paula, Children's Health Dallas, TX - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Check out website www.chrisnikic.com - first Ironman w/Down Syndrome - he & his Dad set goal to 'Get 1% Better Every Day'.
Tavannie, Mizuho Americas - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Many are promoted with those ideas in mind. But when pushed to task, do not perform to expectations. How do you deal with that?
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Performance evals are also the culmination of a performance evaluation cycle. They should be the assessment of the goals set at the beginning of the year
Hamish, Leidos, Philly - via Zoom · 4 years ago
My problem: most of my previous leaders can't / won't coach me on how to improve my judgment
Heidi Young, NH DHHS - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Performance evals shouldn't be just talked about once per year
J. Nolfo, BASF, Raleigh - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Completely agree. Just had that conversation recently. A lot of jobs today are not Do x over and over again. It's using your brain to more the organization ahead by the decisions you are making...in other words your judgement.
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Hamish, I always ask leaders why they make decisions they make… Not to question it, but to learn
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
It’s like AI. Unless you know why they do what they do you won’t be able to emulate and copy and adjust your own decision making
Kristi Murray, Sodexo - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Carla, great idea for feedback from boss
Chris, ESCNEO, Cleveland OH - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Decisions should lead to the desired outcomes/results we want
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
YES! Chris. Right now we are running through multiple changes without a clear understanding of the end state.
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I always couch those discussion as JO Mentoring…
Hamish, Leidos, Philly - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Carla - I tend to want a formal / planned / mentoring relationship - but I think I should be more 'in the moment' as you suggest.
Sumi J - via Zoom · 4 years ago
COVID yes education has had to change ,adapt-RUN
denise's iPad - via Zoom · 4 years ago
For me getting promoted in my job was so exciting because I work for Home Depot so when Covid started I only knew how to do returns at the service desk being put there cause there was no coverage I was forced to learn all accepts of the job I was truly great ful I worked overtime every week and worked my butt off and I succeeded I love my job 100% no I’m out on leave and missing my job had to have a major surgery all is good but I do want to move up the ladder with my dept.
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Hamish, I have found that those micro conversations often expose personalities that are willing to take the time to mentor. Sometimes you have to start small with mini conversations to see if they are willing to invest in you with longer conversations. It is not always your direct supervisor… some people are just more willing to share their experiences than others. The only way to figure that out is to engage
Chris, ESCNEO, Cleveland OH - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Carla, for me in coaching, it's difficult to teach people how to fish. They want to be told.
J. Nolfo, BASF, Raleigh - via Zoom · 4 years ago
BIB: Every year Arnold Palmer would go to his coach to learn how to swing a golf club.
Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Reboots are also a pain in the ass
Heidi Young, NH DHHS - via Zoom · 4 years ago
New careers will give you that opportunity - it's humbling and awesome!
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Agree, Chris. As a mentor I want someone who is willing to learn, not just check the mentor box thinking it is a speed pass to advancement
Josh, RIce, Houston - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Is the imposter syndrome just the “s-curve” of development?
denise's iPad - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Yes I’m also a coach love to teach and share my knowledge but only a few catch on the others don’t care because they are there just for the money my mom always told me if you don’t love doing what your doing you are never going to be happy and that’s part of my training I start with that first and then proceed on to next topic.
Kris, Disney CA - via Zoom · 4 years ago
A battle of the heart and brain.
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
OMG! Struggling with this so much right now. With my new job I am trying to remind myself that I need to learn, but at the same time I want to prove that I can add value
Kristi Murray, Sodexo - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I'm in the heat of that with a new job. I want to learn it all and perform well, but I have to be vulnerable to ask about a lot of things.
Becky, NxJ, London UK - via Zoom · 4 years ago

Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Hard to be patient at level 1 when you are not sure how long you need to be there.
Lindsay, Infotek, Alabama - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Charlie - you posted this last week 1/ Learning from the feedback we receive is often challenging, as our desire to grow conflicts with our equally strong desire to be appreciated for who we are.
Brent French, WPI, Massachusetts - via Zoom · 4 years ago

Tammi, NTTData, Arkansas - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Lindsay, Major Pain is my go to for so many moments!
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Patricia, it is killing kids resiliency and self esteem
Jen; Findlay, Ohio, ADP- Grp 1 - via Zoom · 4 years ago
'you know it could just always be worse, lets focus on the good things and ignore the bad'......I'm making faces in my head about this
Heidi Young, NH DHHS - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Patricia - and we do this now for our kids - I think we're scarring them - yikes!
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I wonder if those numbers go up for married people.
Lindsay, Infotek, Alabama - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I bet @Chris is feeling out of control of his life with that sweet baby!
Heidi Young, NH DHHS - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Have to keep reminding myself to do that
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Ah yes, Lindsay. Part professional, part mother, part zoo keeper
Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Goat rodeos over here… I’ve been equating stability and control as things I need to give up on. I may think I have them, but that false impression and expectation has been making me have a bad attitude
Paula, Children's Health Dallas, TX - via Zoom · 4 years ago
If you don't do 2, you'll end up doing 1 again!
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Chris, it is all about setting realistic expectations and taking the wins where you can
Heather, Infotek, Omaha, Nebraska - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Lost a lot of respect for 'Leaders' who only did the #2 part.
Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Also sharing the “uh” with the team. Not to circle the problem and just complain about it, but because it’s often more than just your unique problem. Stop trying to fight the “uh” solo
Lori Jarvis - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Would this mean that a leader would need to lead by example to get their employees to be on their side?
Carla, USN - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Chris… that is so key! Trying to “fix” everything on your own is impossible. Sometimes just acknowledging it out loud helps break ideas loose… it’s no longer just your problem to fix
J. Nolfo, BASF, Raleigh - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Is there ever a situation when it is a 1, 3?
Heidi Young, NH DHHS - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Great one today - have to hop off but as always - love it!
Patricia Ramirez, San Diego - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Could it be you score your self lower than you really are?
Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Patricia was just wondering whether the manipulation zone could be reflective of the person being over indexed on the negative and needs the balance of the positive as well
Josh Hays, Food for Good, Little Rock, AR - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I think the 1/2 and 1/3 can be something other than just 'Manipulation' though, could it not also be a 'Self Confidence' issue?
Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Perhaps reverse could also be true?
Dan Walker, WPI, Alaska - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Charlie, I think you’ve earned some extra time today
Josh Hays, Food for Good, Little Rock, AR - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I guess Manipulation could be manipulating others or yourself, either way... yourself with self confidence
Patricia Ramirez, San Diego - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Chris yes that is like what Meghan mentioned. Seeing the glass 1/2 empty vs 1/2 full.
J. Nolfo, BASF, Raleigh - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Got to drop. Thanks for answering my question. Great stuff!!!!
Chris, ESCNEO, Cleveland OH - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Thanks for a great session today! I'm looking forward to learning more on transitioning from an industrial model to a more responsive information model.
Nell Mcbride - via Zoom · 4 years ago
This was so enlightening...I really like the discomfort that this brings so you are more likely to reflect on what you can do to change/improve. Self awareness takes time & a lot of courage. Thanks everyone and have a great rest of the day!
Lori Jarvis - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Why are some people more inclined to give more direct feedback, then, whereas others might be more inclined to hold back on their thoughts (or to focus on one aspect of it)?
Enrique Lopez - Center for Autism and Related Disorders - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Thank you for the presentation, I need to attend to my center but will surely sign up for the next. Have a great day!
Rosemary, Home Depot - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Note it is manipulative in the 1-2 score, not the 2-3 score
Laura, NxJ, NJ - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Hi Denise, the formal content is typically within the hour, but we usually continue the conversation, Q&A up to 12:30, can come and go as you need!
Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Denise the class typically goes an hour for the core and then there’s convo/discussion afterward. Definitely a trend for going over, hence why we give Charlie a hard time. That said, that extra last half hour often contains some great nuggets

What advice do you have for choosing the peers to score us? If you only choose 'friends' that will skew the score. How do you find the balance in who to ask?
denise's iPad - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Just asking because I have anther class at 1
Paula, Children's Health Dallas, TX - via Zoom · 4 years ago
All sessions are online, so you can go back & resume where you dropped off, or rewatch/share w/others.

Great Stuff! Off to serve our team.
Josh, RIce, Houston - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I feel like it’s almost like trying to translate from a different language. It slows down your thinking
Ruth Girvan - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I thought you meant Minimum Viable Product !
Rosemary, Home Depot - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Our people are our advantage because we have a great culture - the more our associates embrace and live the culture they become the advantage
Heather, Infotek, Omaha, Nebraska - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Lindsay, send me the champagne before my feedback session, lol
Patricia Ramirez, San Diego - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Are you saying we should be giving unfiltered feedback? That is like complaining about someone who just says what they are thinking with out thinking of how it will be perceived.
Tavannie, Mizuho Americas - via Zoom · 4 years ago
So true. I actual stop and wait to hear what they have to say. But I've seen others ask and race off as they are asking.
denise's iPad - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Recognition is something that drives a person to shrive to do the best
Tavannie, Mizuho Americas - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Neither. Is there a third option? Choose to be professionally honest with guidance. Why not bring up what can be improved, but give directions on how and the why?
Josh, RIce, Houston - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Problem => Person (brain) => LHF Filter (How big this filter determines everything I think) =>>>>>>>>>>>>> =>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Make Decision
Tavannie, Mizuho Americas - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Explain what can be improved, and say here is how we can make it better. Or try the following techniques and see if they work for you.
Lindsay, Infotek, Alabama - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I have to prep for my next mtg - thanks for brilliant session today - good stuff; lots to think about

Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
It’s hard to be “nice” asshole. Especially with out a expectation/culture of “harsh” feedback from folks, it makes you feel rough. It’s not fun being an asshole, but that’s funny since I often appreciate something being that asshole for me.
Brent French, WPI, Massachusetts - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@chris: I think Charlie had same perspective; doesn’t like to be the a-hole, but he’s elevated it to an art form…the “be the jerk people need'
Ruth Girvan - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Chris agree… I find it hard to be the asshole… but I too crave the harsh TRUE feedback
Dan Walker, WPI, Alaska - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@ Chris, it sucks in the moment but am always glad to have gotten it later.
Dan Walker, WPI, Alaska - via Zoom · 4 years ago
And I’ve found some of the most appreciative people are the ones I’ve given the hardest/most critical feedback to
Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I’m struggling to find the words, but it’s like that concept of mismatched expectations. I want that from you, but I don’t want to do it. It’s not fair that you aren’t living up to that expectation
Kristi Murray, Sodexo - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I love 'be the jerk people need' from Brent
Mike Collette-MA-Prototype Training Systems - via Zoom · 4 years ago
I think that was the mic drop moment Charlie… excellent!
Lori Jarvis - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Coach Macky, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this from your coaching experience, too, but are people sometimes more likely to listen to their peers than to leaders because they are more likely to empathize with their situation?
Ruth Girvan - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@ Dan yes agree - the most powerful moments in my career are when you’ve helped someone to an aha moment
denise's iPad - via Zoom · 4 years ago
Employees at my job are jealous of me because my manager and ASM give me opportunity to grow because they know I do a great job. I’m there for the experience and the knowledge where they don’t care.

@Brent my carpal tunnel from this session will affect my 21.2 performance
Ruth Girvan - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@ Mike - its worth the carpel tunnel
Brent French, WPI, Massachusetts - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Mike bullshit nothing will keep you from dominating 21.2
Chris, USN, Seattle - via Zoom · 4 years ago
@Brent We went beyond the humble brag there lol
